Coffee Bean Roasting At Home

How To Roast Coffee At Home

This was the humble beginning for Black Powder. It’s a lot of fun and sometimes turns out great….but sometimes it is just a learning experience.

We welcome questions from the home roasters group. We started out on a 1 kg electric drum roaster, but over the years we have worked customers with popcorn popper, grill rotisserie drums, and cast iron oven roasting. No matter how you do it…..just have fun.

All of our bean are available for sale to home roasters. We will also provide advice on how to roast that bean to maximize its flavor profile. It is not as simple as the resulting color of the bean, but controlling the cycle (time and temperature) to get that color. If you go too hot or too fast, the sugar matrix just isn’t right…you get some bitters and burnt roast tastes in the cup. Also, if you use low elevation grown bean which are soft¸ they go through 1st crack early and are not as stable between 1st and 2nd crack. Buy SHB (strictly hard beans) beans to get you better control and better results.

The best site we have found is at Sweet Maria’s (which is how I started to educate myself).

Some great you tube videos:

Popcorn Popper

Gas Grill

Pot “Roasting” (not roasting…but baking coffee)

Couple warnings. Coffee needs 420-450 deg F to become fully roasted. It will smoke so make sure you have an externally vented area. If you take more than 20 minutes to roast your coffee, the sugars will breakdown the cup quality degrades.
