Old News – New Products in December

A. Sulawesi Rantemario Angin. The Rantemario is a washed coffee from the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Olam Indonesia carefully curates coffees from small holders on Sulawesi to make an impressive, consistent Grade 1 blend. To the locals of the area, Angin is truly a ‘highland’ as it is located at around 1900 masl and extremely difficult to navigate. The local Sumbawa horse is the preferred method of conveyance in this terrain due to its small size and agility compared to the larger Australian horses that are common there.

  • Altitude: 1600 Meters
  • Certification: Organic, Direct Trade

  • Description: Coffee is Chiapas’ most important cash crop with a history from the 19th century. While most coffee is grown in Soconusco, other areas grow it, including the municipalities of Oxchuc, Panthelo, El Bosque, Tenejapa, Chenalho, Larrainzarr, and Chalchihuitan. Many Chiapas coffee farmers are indigenous and grow the coffee under the shade of native trees without the use of chemicals and pesticides. Some of this coffee is even grown in environmentally protected areas, as Chiapas’ rainforests are home to thousands of animals and plants, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Chiapas is ranked second in forest resources in Mexico, containing nearly 60% of Mexico’s tropical tree species. On top of this great biodiversity, high altitudes, steady rain, and volcanic soil all factor into this coffee.

C. Guatemaulan Antiqua – Iglesias

  • Origin – Guatemala
  • Location at Origin – Antigua
  • Name of Farm – Iglesias

  • The famous ancient city of Antigua contains over 43 churches, so it is not surprise that this special coffee gets the brand “Iglesias”. Antigua Iglesias comes from the Plantation Santo Tomas and El Vallecito. Both are located in Ciudad Vieja in the state of Sacatepéquez at the slopes of the Volcano Agua. The coffee grows under Gravilea trees in rich volcanic soil. After harvest, the coffee is brought to the famous mill, Concepcion Escuintla. During the coffee’s time at Concepcion, it is sundried on patios, separated by size, density, and color. The result is a superior coffee with extreme complexities.
